Born in Melbourne, Tony Macdougall has worked in book publishing in Australia and the United Kingdom since 1964. Since 1969, he has conceived, designed and published Australian non-fiction books under the Clarion imprint, and has also written more than a dozen titles himself. He was editor-in-chief of the eight-volume Australian Encyclopaedia 70th anniversary edition, published 1996.
For the past decade he and his wife, the glass-maker and ceramics artist Veronica Burns, have lived in a studio home they designed and helped to build at Binalong, New South Wales, in the beautiful hill country near Canberra.
Members of Tony Macdougall's family served in both World Wars, and his interest in military history dates back to boyhood. His father was an officer in the 2nd AIF, serving in the Mediterranean and North-West Europe. His stepfather was a lead driver on a gun team in France in 1918. On his mother's side, an ancestor served in Australia's first regiment, the New South Wales Corps. Her older brother was killed on Gallipoli while serving in the 3rd Battalion.
Tony Macdougall has drawn upon his extensive collection of war photographs, wartime journals and memorabilia to illustrate his books.
Tony Macdougall titles include:
