Australian Books with a Difference
Niki Horin

Niki Horin is the author of the worldwide bestseller, The Search for Tutankhamun.

The Search for Tutankhamun is a 100% non-fiction account of the story of the search for Tutankhamun’s tomb, presented in a fun and engaging paper-engineering format.

The text has been written specifically for young readers. The main narrative tells the exciting tale of search and discovery that was the quest to find Tutankhamun’s tomb. The focus of the narrative is solely on Howard Carter (the tomb discoverer), and this gives the narrative text a biographical feel, enabling young readers to easily follow the story of just one main character.

The narrative text is accompanied by realistic narrative illustrations (by Australian-based artist Andrew Hopgood). These illustrations are closely based on the archival photography from this historic expedition – and the objective with these illustrations was to bring these iconic images of the search and discovery of the tomb to life in full-colour.

In addition to the narrative text are captions for the more than 40+ archival photos from the expedition and 50+ spectacular artifact photos that appear throughout the book (the artifact photography is by world renowned and award-winning artifact photographer Araldo de Luca). The captions and paper engineering elements in the book work separately from the narrative to explain specific aspects of ancient Egyptian culture or further elaborate on elements of the narrative text.

The key aims of the book are to inform children about the facts related to this significant historical event and to excite their interest in history, archaeology and ancient civilizations. These aims are met in the quality of the written and visual content that was based on only the best academic and archival resources, while the latter aim is further realised in the lavish presentation of the book and the inclusion of interactive paper-engineering.

At the 2008 Children's Book Council of Australia Awards, The Search for Tutankhamun was selected as a 'Notable Book 2008'.
